A Roma Legend
Once upon a time there was a king, a queen and a prince. They were very happy but unfortunately the queen died. The king married second time. His new wife did not like the prince and all the time she was making plans how to get rid of the boy. Therefore, he was growing unhappily. His only friend was his young horse with a star on his forehead.
The boy grew up. One day the stepmother made a loaf of bread and put poison inside. The horse with a star on the forehead saw this and told the prince when he was taking him out of the stable:
‘Your stepmother will give you bread with poison inside. Do not eat! If you try even a morsel you will die!’
When the boy came home his stepmother said:
‘Aren’t you hungry, my boy? Look what a nice piece of bread I have made for you!’
‘Thank you, mother!’ – The boy answered politely, took the bread but did not eat.
The time passed. The king’s wife thought of another plan – she put a snake under the boy’s pillow. But the horse saw it again. When the king’s son went to him he told him:
‘Be careful! Your mother put a snake under your pillow.’
The boy came home and killed the snake.
On the third time the stepmother put needles in his bed. She hoped the lad would come tired, lay on the needles and die. The horse however warned him again.
‘This time she put needles in your bed!’
The boy came home but went to sleep in another chamber. The queen could not kill him again.
She started to wonder – how it was possible to fail every time when nobody knew! Who was warning the king’s son? Then she remembered that the only living creature that had seen her was the horse with the star on the forehead. She decided to kill him first.
One day she told her husband:
‘Listen, man, I am very ill and there is only one cure for my illness! We have to slaughter that horse with star on the forehead. I have to eat his liver. If we do not do this I will die soon.’
‘We will slaughter it. – The king agreed. – My son loves it very much but we will slaughter it to save you!’
The king went sad to his son and told him the words of his stepmother. The boy immediately guessed that she was not ill but she wanted to kill the horse first and then him himself. The prince however did not want to make his father sadder so he said:
‘All right, father, but let me make a final walk with him. Then slaughter it if you want!’
‘Go, son, take a walk!’ – The king agreed.
The prince jumped on the horse’s back and dashed with him. He was riding, riding until he reached another world and another country. He found there a beautiful woman and married her. For the horse with the star on the forehead he built a large stable. And they lived happily many years.
